Why won't my baby nap?

The first time I tried to put my baby down for a nap, I felt like I was in a scene from a comedy film. I held my breath, gently rocked her to sleep, and then, as if in slow motion, she opened her eyes the moment I tried to lay her down. It was a moment of disbelief and frustration. Why wouldn't she sleep? All the sleep books promised me it would get easier, but here I was, questioning everything.

Understanding why napping can feel impossible.

Let’s be real: naps can sometimes feel like a mystical quest. Your baby might seem tired, rubbing those tiny eyes, yet the moment you place them in the crib, they rocket awake, like a superhero discovering their powers. This could be due to multiple reasons, and it’s okay to feel confused. Babies and toddlers have different sleep cycles and they don’t always align with our adult logic.

Sometimes, it’s about that sweet spot, timing matters so much. If you miss it, they may burst into tears instead of surrendering to sleep. Too awake or too tired can sabotage the best intentions of nap time.

Common culprits behind nap-time struggles.

  • Overstimulation. If your little one has been running around or experiencing new things, they may be too wired to wind down.
  • Hunger. A hungry baby is rarely a sleepy baby. Is it snack time?
  • Discomfort. Check for wet diapers, tight clothes, or even that the room is too bright or too noisy.
  • Separation anxiety. As babies grow, they may feel clingy. Being apart from you at nap time can feel like an enormous ask, even if it is for a brief moment.
  • Developmental milestones. If your baby is mastering a new skill, like crawling or standing, you might find nap times disrupted simply because they can't stop practicing!

Finding rhythm in the chaos.

So, what can you do? The truth is, every baby is unique, and finding a consistent nap rhythm might take some experimenting. Establishing a solid routine can help signal to your baby that it’s time to sleep. Even a simple pre-nap routine, like a cozy cuddle or a quick song, can be effective.

If you've been dealing with a particularly feisty nap fighter, remember that you are doing amazing. It’s okay to feel lost at times. We’re all just trying to figure this out, one day at a time.

Acceptance is part of this journey.

Some days, it will feel like you’re wrestling a tiny octopus, and those cuddles you hoped would lead to peaceful slumber will end up in giggles instead. It’s all part of the process. Just know, you’re not alone in this, there are countless parents nodding along to the same struggles.

If you're reading this while your baby is wiggling beside you instead of napping, take a deep breath and remind yourself: you’re doing your best. This stage will come with its challenges but also moments of pure joy. Remember, one disrupted nap doesn’t define your day. You’ve got this.
